The Pharmacy: Within pharmaceutical circles

The Pharmacy: Within pharmaceutical circles

In 1675, Jesuits opened a pharmacy in Opole College, which they run until the dissolution of the Jesuit Order in 1776. The pharmacy was in operation until 1800, and, in 1801 it merged with the municipal pharmacy. The medicine was prepared by an apothecary in the pharmacy lab. Also, within the institution of a pharmacy, professional advice and diagnosis was provided, and the poorest people were given free medicine. In the past, apart from herbal and other mixtures or powders, chemists sold, among other things, liqueur, sponge cake, gingerbread and even wines and candles. On the vault of the former premises of the Jesuit pharmacy, we can see an extant painting showing Christ the Healer. Also noteworthy is a window with a rococo ornament, which was used to dispense medicine. At present, the room houses the exhibition “Within Pharmaceutical Circles” (‘W kręgu farmacji’), which shows a collection of receptacles and tools, as well as other items of furnishings of various pharmacies from the Opole region in the period of the turn of 19th and 20th centuries.
